Medical Laboratory Technology Department

The Medical Laboratory Technology program assists students in acquiring the knowledge and basic skills for entry into the clinical laboratory field.  Under the supervision of a pathologist or medical technologist, diagnostic and screening tests are performed on blood, tissues, and body fluids using a variety of technologies.  Graduates are awarded the Assocaite of Applied Science Degree in MLT.

Laboratory tests play an important role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of many diseases and in the promotion of health.  The clinical MLT performs these tests under the supervision of a pathologist (MD) or medical technician (MT).  Data is developed and reported on the blood, tissues, and fluids of the human body by using a variety of percise methodologies and technologies.  MLT's perform all routine tests and can demonstrate discrimination between closely similar items and correction of errors by the use of preset strategies.  The MLT has knowledge of specific techniques and instruments and is able to recognize factors that directly affect procedures and results.  MLT's also monitor quality assurance procedures.

Employment opportunities include work in Hospital Laboratories, Medical  Clinic Laboratories, Private Medical Laboratories, Armed Forces Health Care Facilities, City, State and Federal Health Agencies, and Industrial Medical Laboratories.
