Dr. Mary Lou Brown mlbrown@trcc.edu
Division Chair - Math, Science & Technology Coordinator of Teacher Education Office: 210 Westover Administration Building Phone: (573) 840-9621
Dr. Mary Lou Brown is a native of Benton, Mo. She obtained a B.A. in mathematics and sociology from William Woods College (now university) in Fulton, Mo., and began teaching math in Wayzata, Minn., when she was 21 years old. She married her husband, David, a dentist, and while he served in the U.S. Navy, she taught at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Va., during the first year of court-ordered bussing for dessegregation. She received her M.A. in counseling and guidance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City while teaching math at Center South Junior High School in Kansas City. At 28, she tabled her teaching career for that of mother. She raised a son, Drew, and a daughter, Julia, who are now grown.
A wise woman once said that the life of a woman has three stages: the first 20 years are spent growing up; the next 20 years raising the next generation; and the last 40 years are spent changing the world. Dr. Brown is in that final stage. After staying at home with her children for 11 years, she returned to teaching as a teacher education instructor at Three Rivers Community College. She plans to change the world through the field of education. She is currently serving as Division Chair of Math, Science and Technology and is Coordinator of Teacher Education at Three Rivers. It is fitting that she completed her terminal degree in the last phase of her life. She obtained her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Missouri - Columbia.
Dr. Brown has a passion for mathematics education. Her goal is to improve the teaching of mathematics in the public schools of the region. To this end and in collaboration with Kevin Wheeler, she developed the CONNECT 4 MATH program.
