THREE RIVERS STUDENT
RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. - A Three Rivers Community College student was recently honored by a leading national teacher education organization.

The National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs honored Three Rivers student Marissa Howell at the Association’s national convention. Howell was one of only two students in the nation to receive NACCTEP’s 2007-2008 National Scholarship. Howell received the award at the association’s national convention in Denver, Colo., earlier this month.

Howell is a 2005 graduate of Piggott High School in Piggott, Ark., and the daughter of Francine and Jimmy Howell. She is a member of the Three Rivers Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students in two-year colleges. She plans to graduate from Southeast Missouri State University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Howell is a student in Three Rivers’ Teacher Education program and plans to pursue a career as a classroom teacher.

“I believe teaching will be an extremely rewarding career. It will be my hope that what my students learn in my classroom will not only prepare them for the next grade level but also help them through life. I will do everything I can to help my students become better citizens and productive members of society,” Howell said.

Accompanying Howell to the NACCTEP convention was Three Rivers Teacher Education Instructor Madawn Traxell. The NACCTEP convention theme was “Leaping to New Heights.” NACCTEP is a national organization designed to promote the community college role in the recruitment, preparation and retention of teachers and to advance quality teacher education programs in the community college.
