STEPHENSON SELECTED AS
SIXTH PRESIDENT OF THREE RIVERS
POPLAR BLUFF – The Three Rivers Community College Board of Trustees unanimously hired Dr. Devin Stephenson of Sumiton, Ala. as the sixth president of the college. The action was taken at the board’s regular monthly meeting on Nov. 12.
Stephenson, 55, is currently the vice president of external affairs at Bevill State Community College. He was one of the top three candidates recommended to the trustees by a 16-member community Presidential Search Committee earlier this year. Stephenson will assume the president’s position at Three Rivers on July 1, 2009, following the retirement of President Joe Rozman.
The trustees voted unanimously to hire Stephenson. Trustee James Grassham of Van Buren was unable to attending the Wednesday meeting due to health concerns. However, he sent his proxy vote in favor of hiring Stephenson with fellow trustee Bill Hollida.
“Dr. Stephenson is an exceptional leader and educator,” said trustee chairman Steve Cookson. “His long experience as a proven leader and administrator and his extensive work with rural community colleges will ensure that Three Rivers Community College continues on a path of growth and its successful record of serving the students and communities in our region.”
“It is an honor and privilege to be selected as the next President of Three Rivers Community College,” said Stephenson. “I appreciate the confidence that the Board of Trustees has placed in me to lead this fine Institution. TRCC is vitally important to the future educational and economic development of this region and it will continue to be an active participant in all aspects of the life of the community. I look forward to becoming a member of the TRCC Team and to working with all of our stakeholders in effectively fulfilling the mission of Three Rivers Community College.”
Stephenson is an alumnus of a community college. He graduated from Walker Junior College in Jasper, Al. He subsequently received a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College. Stephenson earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in Administration of Higher Education from the University of Alabama. He has more than 30 years of experience in educational administration within technical and community colleges.
Stephenson plans to visit Three Rivers during the months prior to his assuming the president’s position to become better acquainted with the college and community and to stay involved in strategic planning at TRCC.
