Overview

Lawyers, also known as attorneys, represent clients, including individuals, businesses, and government agencies involved in legal disputes. In order to advise and represent clients, lawyers are responsible for interpreting laws and rulings and creating legal documents, including lawsuits, contracts, deeds, and wills.

Lawyers may specialize in a specific area within the legal system, such as criminal law, corporate law, taxes, family law, or litigation. The job can be high stress, depending on the specialty, but income for lawyers is good.

To become a lawyer, you must complete a bachelor's degree; be accepted into and complete a graduate law school program and pass a state bar exam.

Three Rivers' Associate of Arts degree, Pre-Law pathway is designed to prepare you for transfer to a baccalaureate program at a four-year university. It offers an affordable way to fulfill your general education requirements and expand your knowledge of this field. Three Rivers' class sizes are small, offering more personalized instruction than at a large university. The faculty hold advanced degrees in the specialties they teach.

Most practicing lawyers work for law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. Many specialize in a specific area, such as criminal, civil or corporate law. Lawyers must have good analytical skills, plus strong communication, research, and problem-solving abilities.
