The Medical Billing and Coding program prepares students with the knowledge of ICD and CPT coding to assign accurate codes for diagnosis, procedures, and other health services. Students will also learn various clerical and administrative functions that relate to medical facilities. The program prepares the graduate to meet the challenges in today’s healthcare billing and coding systems through the application of practical and theoretical general education and hands-on skill development. Students will prepare for and be eligible to pursue AHIMA Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification.

Program Purpose

The Medical Billing and Coding program prepares students with the knowledge of ICD and CPT coding to assign accurate codes for diagnosis, procedures, and other health services. Students will also learn various clerical and administrative functions that relate to medical facilities. The program prepares the graduate to meet the challenges in today’s healthcare billing and coding systems through the application of practical and theoretical general education and hands-on skill development. Program Outcomes

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of CPT and ICD-CM coding systems.
  • Demonstrate the proper completion of health insurance claim forms.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with physicians, hospitals, and other health facilities utilizing medical terminology and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrate technological skills necessary for navigating (HER) electronic health records, encoding and grouping software, utilizing practice management including (HIM) health information management systems and validation of codes assigned by (CAC) computer assisted coding software.
