Three Rivers College is hosting its 27th Annual Children’s Theater Drama Camp for students entering grades 2-8. The camp will be held 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. July 8 – 12 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers College Poplar Bluff campus. The students will have a final performance at 11 a.m. on July 12 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

The camp will cover theater essentials including acting, theater technology, improvisation, costume/prop building, monologues, script writing, stage makeup, readers theater/one acts, and musical theater.

Subrina Berger and Suzanne Cowan are the camp’s instructors. Berger has been participating in theater for more than 35 years. She has been part of productions such as TRC’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Steel Magnolias, The Little Mermaid, and many others. She teaches preschool at Sacred Heart. This will be her third year as an instructor of the drama camp.

“Students of the TRC Drama Camp are introduced to a broad spectrum of theatrical areas including musical, acting, writing, and improvising,” said Berger. “All students learn and rehearse a musical number with choreography and singing. The early grades are given a reader’s theater script which they rehearse for four days and then perform. Older students are guided through the playwright process and create an original one-act play.”

“Students divide up costume, prop, lighting, sound, acting roles, and makeup. Costumes and props are created, not purchased,” continued Berger. “By the end of the week we have an hour show ready to put on stage.”

Cowan has been involved in theater for more than eight years. Her productions include TRC’s Nunsense, Once Upon a Mattress, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Little Mermaid. Cowan is a K-12 music teacher at Naylor Schools. This will be her second year as an instructor of the drama camp.

“Subrina and I are excited about this year’s Drama Camp, ‘It’s About Time!,’” said Cowan. “This year, kids will Rock Around the Clock with Miss Suzy and explore time travel with Miss Subrina. We are looking forward to working with the kids and having fun in the process!”

The cost of the drama camp is $75, which includes a T-shirt, scripts, notebook, daily snack and drink, and “LOADS OF FUN,” said Berger. The entry form can be found online at trcc.edu/dramacamp. Turn in the form and pay by check at TRC Student Accounts or in the Tinnin Gallery, or register and pay online at tinnin.ticketleap.com ($4.75 online fee applies).

The deadline to register is June 21.
