In “State Fair,” the Frake family travels for three days from their family farm to the 1946 Iowa State Fair. Ma and Pop are intent on winning prizes for their hog raising and mincemeat cooking, while their children Margy and Wayne experience love and heartbreak on the midway. The Frake family discovers what is most important and carries home lessons on love and life that will sustain them long after the State Fair.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair” was the only musical they wrote directly for a feature film. This romantic story set in America’s heartland was adapted for stage in 1995 and features additional songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein songbook.
