Consideration for Special Circumstances
Financial aid eligibility is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which currently uses financial information from the previous two years to estimate a household’s current circumstances. If your or your family’s financial situation has changed significantly from what is reported on your FAFSA, you may be eligible to have your financial aid adjusted. (For example, if you’ve lost a job or otherwise experienced a reduction in income.) Income adjustments are not needed for students with a negative 1,500 to zero EFC.
Special Circumstances warranting Professional Judgment Consideration
Circumstances may include, but are not limited to:
- Significant change in income
- Separation or divorce
- Death of a parent or student’s spouse after applying for Federal Student Aid
- Unusually high medical expenses (not covered by insurance, exceeding 11% of adjusted gross income, and not claimed as a deduction on income taxes)
To request a Special Circumstance, please fill out and submit the Special Circumstance Request form for the appropriate year, found on the Forms & Documents page under Special Documents.
Unusual Circumstances (Dependency Status)
Eligibility for financial aid is determined by the Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA) which uses information about the student and parents. Unusual circumstances will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as students have unique family situations. For students who have indicated unusual circumstances on the 2024-25 FAFSA, students will be notified by email for additional information that may be needed to make a determination.
Unusual circumstances warranting dependency override consideration for the student might include but not limited to:
- Abusive/unsafe/threatening environment
- Abandonment or estrangement by parents and have not been adopted
- You or parent are incarcerated
- Parent(s) cannot be located or contacted and have not been adopted
- Granted refugee or asylee status and are separated from your parents, or your parents are displaced in a foreign country
- Victim of human trafficking
Unusual circumstances do not include:
- Parents refuse to contribute to the student’s education
- Parents will not provide information for the FAFSA or verification
- Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income tax purposes
- Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency
To make an Unusual Circumstance Request, please fill out and submit the form for the appropriate year, found on the Forms & Documents page under Special Documents. Once all documentation has been received, students will be notified of the results via student email no later than 60 days after the student enrolls. TRC will presume that any student who has been approved for an adjustment for unusual circumstances through Three Rivers College to be independent for each subsequent award year unless the student informs the institution that their circumstances have changed or the institution has conflicting information about the student’s independence.
