A scholarship has been created for Mississippi County students who enroll at Three Rivers College.
The James L. Byrd III Memorial Scholarship will provide annual scholarships for students who are graduates of Charleston or East Prairie High School, as well as Mississippi County residents who have completed the High School Equivalency exam. Students may be degree-seeking or enroll in a program at any of Three Rivers College’s locations or online.
“On behalf of Three Rivers Endowment Trust and Three Rivers College, we are honored that Mr. Byrd’s estate will make an impact on students from Mississippi County for many years to come,” said Michelle Reynolds, Director of Development at Three Rivers College. The funds provided from the estate will be endowed, with only the return on investment being awarded annually, so funds will be available for perpetuity.
Byrd was a landowner and the owner of South Missouri Broadcasting Company (KCHR), which he founded in 1954 and operated until his retirement. Byrd served with the Missouri National Guard for 16 years and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Charleston.
