Three Rivers College recently welcomed Steve Halter, Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce President, to campus for a lecture on “Soft Skills for Business” that students will need when interviewing for future jobs.

Halter, who was also a General Manager for 15 years at three different Walmart Supercenters, among various other positions throughout his career, covered things like proper attire, greetings, resume and reference tips, and numerous other topics to help students stand out from the crowd.

Halter also discussed the recent growth of behavioral interview questions replacing traditional questions, and how to answer them. One such example students discussed was “How did you handle a situation when …”
Halter also recommended the disappearing practice of sending a handwritten thank you card in the mail to make the applicant stand out.
“Most of the mail I get is bills,” Halter said. “So I when get something handwritten, I read it.”
