Three Rivers College will offer six new studio art courses to provide students with expanded opportunities as part of its Associate of Arts transfer pathway. All courses will be available in January 2024 and will be taught by Artist-in-Residence, Steve Whitworth.
A celebrated local artist, Whitworth graduated from Three Rivers with an Associate of Arts degree and then continued his education and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Missouri State University. He is the director of the Margaret Harwell Art Museum and a GIA-trained gemologist who co-owns Whitworth’s Gift Chest Jewelers in Poplar Bluff.
The six classes will be:
ARTS 131 – Drawing I – This is an introductory course providing studio instruction in drawing. Students work in graphite, charcoal, pastels, and other drawing media. Composition, subject matter, rendering, proportion, and perspective are explored. The documentation of work in digital media and development of a portfolio are covered. The student is responsible for materials required for this course. The student is provided an individual studio space.
ARTS 132 – Drawing II – This is an advanced course providing studio instruction in drawing focusing on the specific interests of the student. The student works in a drawing media of his/her choice, concentrating on the thematic, in-depth development of studio work.
ARTS 141 – Color and Design I – This is an introductory studio course to the field of fine art. The student examines the visual element color in both practical application and theory. The interaction of color, color mixing, color impact, digital media, and composition is covered. The student is responsible for materials required for this course.
ARTS 213 – Watercolor – This is an introductory studio course in watercolor painting. The student explores handling and control of watercolor processes. A variety of materials related to watercolor painting is covered, including paper, water media, and brushes. Composition and subject matter is examined. The development of a portfolio and documentation of work in digital media is covered. Students are responsible for materials required for this course. The student is provided an individual studio space.
ARTS 233 – Painting I – This is an introductory studio course in acrylic painting. The student explores handling and control of acrylic painting processes and techniques. A variety of materials related to painting will be covered, including canvas, stretcher frame construction, paint media, and brushes. Composition and subject matter is examined. The documentation of work in digital media and development of a portfolio are covered. The student is responsible for materials required for this course. The student is provided an individual studio space, easel, and table.
ARTS 243 – Painting II – This is an advanced course providing studio instruction in acrylic painting, focusing on the specific interest of the student. The student works with acrylic painting processes and techniques, concentrating on a thematic, in-depth development of studio work. Composition and subject matter is examined. The documentation of work in digital media and development of a portfolio are covered. The student is responsible for materials required for this course. The student is provided an individual studio space, easel, and table.
The Associate of Arts transfer pathway with courses in Art is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university.
