A major or minor in Spanish would be beneficial to enhance many careers, including careers in business, healthcare, and education. The ability to communicate in Spanish, even at a novice-high or intermediate level, will facilitate interaction with Spanish-speaking clients, patients, and customers, both in the U.S. and abroad. Many employers seek persons with knowledge of multiple languages and cultures.

Fluency in Spanish can play a significant role in other career paths such as journalism, law enforcement, social work, and public service. It is of primary significance for interpreters, translators, international businesspersons, and educators—either of Spanish in the U.S. or of English in a Spanish-speaking country.

Learning Spanish introduces students to Hispanic culture, including art, music, and literature, and how it is influenced by history and religion. An understanding of Spanish language and Hispanic culture can facilitate successful navigation of the challenges of travel abroad, and help reap its many rewards, but also help us get to know and understand persons in our own communities who are Hispanic.
