Three Rivers College has added beef cattle and a new hemp crop to provide additional learning opportunities for Agriculture students.

The College’s 108-acre farm in Fairdealing is now home to a herd of 40 beef cattle. It includes 10 Beefmaster cows and 10 Brangus cows, each with a calf at its side.

“We want to provide our Agriculture students hands-on experiences that will help them be successful in their future careers—whether they are interested in row-crop farming or cattle ranching,” said Dr. Melissa Davis, Chair of Communications, Agriculture, Languages, and Fine Arts at Three Rivers College.

This is the second year the College has planted a hemp crop at its Sikeston location. This year, the hemp crop is a dual-purpose variety that is mainly used for fiber, but can be used for CBD products.

In addition to providing a learning opportunity for students, the hemp project has been done in partnership with area farmers to help them learn more about this newly available crop.

Three Rivers offers several degree pathways in agriculture, including an Associate of Applied Science in Agribusiness for students who want to go directly into the workforce, and an Associate of Arts, Agriculture pathway, that will transfer into a bachelor’s degree completion program.
